Caribbean Magic — Sea You Soon!

Seven Days on the Nieuw Statendam of Holland America Line, from Fort Lauderdale via the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, Turks & Caicos, Half Moon Cay, and back. An Experience Report.

I must admit I was skeptical. About thirty years ago, participation in one of the first of the now famous-infamous „Päischtcroisières“ in Luxembourg thoroughly spoiled my appetite for floating all-inclusive hotels. Since then, I have avoided cruises. However, when tempted with a 7-day Caribbean cruise in the cold-drizzly January weather of Luxembourg, especially after a pandemic-induced two-year travel drought, how could one resist?

As I board the Nieuw Statendam of Holland America Line, I have only a vague idea of what awaits me on my first cruise through the glittering Caribbean.

The Nieuw Statendam of Holland America Line.

Day 1 — A Happy Beginning

After landing in Miami and transferring to the port of Fort Lauderdale, the first pleasant surprise awaits: a well-organized embarkation with a smooth process, less stressful than any airport handling. As I bid farewell to the Florida coast, I am already completely overwhelmed by the luxurious ambiance, stylish decor, and warm welcome. Any skepticism is wiped away, and I am looking forward to what lies ahead.

Heading to the Bahamas. The sea is calm, and the barely noticeable rocking of the ship is quite tolerable. Dinner for all is served on the Lido Deck (buffet) or in the Dining Room, without reservations. Since many Americans are on board, the formula is „all you can eat.“ Well, to each their own. In any case, the quality leaves nothing to be desired. For those who prefer a more intimate and exclusive experience, they can reserve a table in one of the six different specialty restaurants for a moderate fee. You have the choice between Rudi’s Sel de Mer (Seafood), Canaletto (Italian), Pinnacle Grill, Tamarind (Asian), and Nami Sushi.

Day 2 — Nassau, Bahamas: More than a Tourist Paradise

In the early morning, the ship reaches the bustling capital of the Bahamas.
