With the opening of the new Cactus market in Esch-Lallange, the shopping offer in southern Luxembourg grows with a modern new meeting place. The supermarket, complete with its own shopping gallery, combines freshness, regional produce and contemporary architecture, all with a focus on proximity and everyday convenience.
From the moment you step inside, it’s clear what this place is all about: taste and craftsmanship. Most of the fruit and vegetables come from the regional Filière Eist Uebst a Geméis, the bakery works with Luxembourgish grain producers, and the cheese counter offers more than 30 varieties of raclette from Luxembourg, France and Switzerland.
“With Cactus Esch-Lallange, we aim to create a modern yet welcoming space in the south of the country, where retail, gastronomy and local producers meet,” explains Laurent Schonckert, Managing Director of the company.
The organic focus also plays a key role. Schonckert highlights Cactus’s pioneering role in this area since the 1970s: “We remain true to our philosophy Nëmmen dat Bescht – with an expanded organic range designed to make conscious consumption even easier.”
Architecture for everyday life
The new building, designed by architectural firm Beiler / François / Fritsch, takes inspiration from the concept of an open market hall – bright, airy, and built from wood and glass. Spread over more than 65,000 square metres, the development includes a 7,000 m² supermarket, 15 shops, a drinks market and 67 apartments.
“This opening reflects our strength: deep local roots combined with a forward-looking vision,” says Véronique Schmit, Director of Marketing, Communication and CSR at Cactus. “We want to live our values of proximity, service and sustainability every single day.”
The site offers generous parking as well as practical services such as Scan Express checkouts, a POST service point and a flower studio. The goal, says Schmit, is “to make everyday life that bit easier.”
A place to stay
To mark the opening, from 29 October to 9 November 2025, Cactus is hosting a range of activities – from family events to tastings and film screenings – all designed to celebrate community spirit and the joy of living.
With an investment of around €150 million and more than 150 new jobs created, the site is also of major economic significance. The project, launched in 2020, was largely carried out by Luxembourgish companies – another example of what Cactus means by being “anchored in the country.”
