Esch2022: A major opportunity for tourism and mobility

The nomination as European Capital of Culture brings many opportunities. Indeed, in the years to come, the Southern Region will evolve, particularly in the sectors of tourism and mobility. The current infrastructures will continue to be developed and new attractions will emerge.

To ensure a pleasant arrival and departure for all visitors, as well as smooth mobility on site, efficient mobility is necessary. Visitors will also want to engage in daytime activities. It will therefore be necessary to build on the existing offer but also to develop new activities. To this end, two digital projects will be developed between now and 2022.

The first, Urban Time Travel, which will allow users to travel back in time in Belval. Indeed, the public will be able to discover the history of the region and learn about the region’s industrial heritage through virtual reality. The second project is the development of a new augmented reality application. From February 2022, visitors will be able to discover their environment thanks to a virtual guide. The application will allow the camera of the smartphone to recognise certain objects and buildings in the region and provide the user with additional information about them in the form of photos, text and videos.

Finally, on a less technological level, another project will invite visitors to discover the region: the Travel Stories, a kind of travel blog which will be published this summer on the Esch2022 website and which will gradually be enriched with stories about well-known and less well-known places in the region as well as anecdotes about traditions and festivities in the South. In addition, people who have visited the region, as well as its inhabitants, will also be able to submit their testimonies for publication.
