Kyrgyzstan: Land of Legendary Mountains. Surrounded by China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan, the serene Kyrgyzstan remains largely off the international tourists’ radar. This less explored country leaves a lasting impression with its original way of life and untouched nature. From the capital Bishkek to the largest lake in the country, Issyk-Kul, to the Kyrgyz highlands and the caravanserai Tash Rabat in the southern At-Bashy mountain range. At the end of our trip, we discover the high-altitude lake Son Kol. An enlightening journey for those willing to step out of their comfort zone.
Why should one travel to Kyrgyzstan, to this country whose borders date back to the times of the USSR? Beware, the list is long! Because of the gleaming white yurts, the traditional nomadic tents set up on the fabulous high plateaus. Because of the enchanting mountain landscapes with peaks reaching up to 6,000 meters (the country’s highest peak, Jengish Chokusu, stands at a staggering 7,439 meters); because of the shepherds on horseback guarding their herds of cows and sheep. Because of the long-haired yaks, grunting like pigs as they populate the mountain landscapes. Because of the shimmering mountain lakes where heaven and earth meet. Also because of the interesting faces of the people here. They are a mix of Kyrgyz, Uighurs, Uzbeks, Kazakhs, Dungans (Muslim Chinese who settled here in the 19th century), and Russians. But one also travels to Kyrgyzstan for the many colours of the vibrant markets with vegetables, dried fruits, and sweet treats. For the colours of the women’s clothes and the men’s hats, the traditional kalpaks. And for the food: the traditional teas, the good soups, and the delightful meat, either roasted or cooked, served here. “Kyrgyzstan is a country where one can still experience adventures,” knows our host Samuel, a Swiss who has been living in Bishkek for over twenty years and runs a travel agency. For those who seek vastness, the exotic, and are drawn to the cultural diversity and rugged charm of rural landscapes, a trip to Kyrgyzstan is a must!
