From its Bavarian roots celebrating a royal wedding, Oktoberfest has gone global. Munich’s beer tents are iconic, but the festival is now celebrated even in Luxembourg. Find out where to experience this Bavarian tradition locally!
Oktoberfest — A Bavarian tradition takes on the world
The original Oktoberfest in Munich traditionally starts on the first of Saturday after September 15 and concludes on German Unity Day on October 3.
The tradition dates back to 1810. To celebrate the wedding of King Ludwig I and his bride, Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen, Munich’s citizens were invited to a major celebration on the so-called “Theresienwiese” on the outskirts of Munich. In subsequent years, Munich decided to continue the celebration on the “Wiesn” as an annual event. Over the years, it has evolved from a local festival to a major event. With various stalls and amusement rides, and most notably, the traditional beer tents where Bavarian beer and food specialities are enjoyed to the tune of traditional brass music, it attracts throngs of visitors from both near and far.
However, Oktoberfest is no longer celebrated exclusively in Munich. Be it Amsterdam, Strasbourg, or Lisbon; everywhere people love to dress up in Lederhosen and Dirndl and enjoy beer, bretzl and weißwurst. Particularly after the occupation of Bavaria by US forces following World War II, this beloved Bavarian festival found its way across the Atlantic and is celebrated in cities like Denver and Cincinnati with great success as well.
But also in Luxembourg…
Here in the Grand-Duchy, Oktoberfest is celebrated in various locations. These are usually limited to one night or over one weekend. Many of these smaller festivals have become established traditions in the country, marking significant dates in the annual events calendar. Given the popularity of the local Oktoberfests, we advise strongly to reserve your spot in advance.
