Wahaha: Chinese BBQ in town

Rue des Bains, or “Street of Hunger” as we’ve recently rebranded it here at Kachen, welcomes a new arrival: Wahaha, a Chinese barbecue restaurant in a vibrant street food atmosphere.

A Smiling Pink Pig

Why a pink pig? “Because it’s cute,” explains the woman behind the counter, who is also the mother of the chef and owner. And indeed, this little pig, featured throughout the restaurant, has a knack for bringing a smile. Add to that the fact that the term Wahaha means “laughing” in Chinese, and it’s hard not to crack a smile as you step in.

After the famous Dancing Noodles on rue de Louvigny, which celebrates noodles, the son of the family now focuses on rice and barbecue.

A Concept Imported from Guangzhou

When speaking with the chef and his mother, it becomes clear that grilled meats have been a staple in China for centuries. The meat is marinated in a secret sauce before being slow-cooked in the oven. The result? Meat with crispy skin and tender flesh.

The bowls at Wahaha are made with duck, chicken, or pork, all featuring a sweet flavor. While the chef prepares the bowl, guests are served a small appetizer: marinated soybean sprouts with a slight kick — a true delight.

The meat is served with vegetables and rice, all presented in traditional Chinese porcelain bowls. It’s a simple dish, but one that’s both hearty and easy to digest. During our visit, all the customers around us were speaking Chinese —a clear indication for us that the culinary tradition is being faithfully upheld.

This spot will please meat lovers, but there are also vegetarian and fish options available.
