Where Europe and the Balkans meet lies Ljubljana, a city with a long history: from a simple Paleolithic dwelling to a Roman town, from the medieval capital of Krain to the capital of present-day Slovenia.
Ljubljana is a modern city that offers everything a tourist desires: museums and galleries, historical sights, seasonal events, nature, and sports. With this diverse range, Ljubljana is a perfect destination for a weekend (or more if you also want to explore the surroundings). Thanks to the new Luxair direct flight from Luxembourg, the Slovenian capital is within easy reach.
Getting Around
Most of Ljubljana’s sights can be easily reached on foot. For more remote places, the bike-sharing system or the bus network are available (especially in the cold winter months). If you wish to venture further into the countryside, rental cars or long-distance buses are at your disposal.
Art and Architecture
If a building immediately catches your eye in Ljubljana, it’s the castle majestically overlooking the city. Not only a medieval fortress, it also hosts temporary exhibitions and a jazz club. Below the castle hill, you can admire the baroque Robba Fountain on Town Square (Mestni Trg). A few steps further northeast, you’ll find the cathedral with its green dome. Continue from there to the riverbank and visit specialty shops, weekend markets, or a seasonal event. Further away from the castle, the Ljubljanica River winds through the city centre. Take a stroll along the bank, marvel at charming bridges, and take a break at one of the numerous cafes.

Cross the Tromostovje Bridge complex (Three Bridges) and admire the PreÅ¡eren Monument in the square of the same name, gazing towards his beloved Julija in a nearby street. Just a few minutes away, you’ll find the enchanting Art Nouveau facade of the Cooperative Bank. From there, head to the terrace of NebotiÄnik (Skyscraper built in the 1930s), where you can enjoy the breathtaking view of the city with a glass of local wine. Art lovers may have to travel a bit further, but a visit to the National Gallery or the alternative art centre Metelkova is definitely worth it.

Accommodation
Perfectly located between PreÅ¡eren Square in the city centre and Tivoli Park in the west, you’ll find, among others, the Best Western and the City Hotel. Whether you prefer to stay at a hotel or a bed and breakfast: Accommodations in Ljubljana are plentiful. Choose according to your preference and availability. If you’re flying with Luxair, it’s worth checking out any special offers.
Central European Cuisine with a Touch of the Balkans
Even though Slovenia’s best chef isn’t in the city, you’ll find excellent restaurants on every corner. If you want to taste the local cuisine, visit Restaurant Julija. If you lean more towards Balkan cuisine, treat yourself to ĆevapÄići at Restaurant Sarajevo’84. Absolute must-tries are specialties like traditional Å truklji (the best at Moji Å¡truklji) and Gibanica. If you’re in Ljubljana in September or October, a visit to the Odprta Kuhna (Open Kitchen) festival on Fridays at PogaÄar Square should be on your to-do list.
