A community center as a meeting place, a source of inspiration, and a driving force for a more sustainable future “” this is the vision behind Ý”pen Lënster, established in Junglinster. This so-called “Tiers-Lieu”, or “Third Place”, serves as a platform for civic engagement, social projects, and creative sustainability initiatives “” open to all generations and cultures.
“Ý”pen is a concept that grew from the heart of the community, by volunteers for volunteers,” explains Nadine Welter, co-leader of the coordination team. Nearly all activities “” from repair cafés and meditation circles to sustainable cooking projects “” are organized and run by dedicated volunteers.
A Place for Connection
Ý”pen’s philosophy rests on two major pillars: permaculture and community spirit. “We focus on valuing life and using our resources sustainably,” says Welter. She is particularly proud of projects like Ý”pen Food, where surplus food from stores is collected and redistributed, and the Repair Café, where broken devices are given a second life. “Everything here has been created solely through donations,” emphasizes Nadine Welter.
Beyond environmental concerns, Ý”pen places a strong emphasis on social cohesion: “We want to be a place where people can meet and learn from one another, no matter their language, background, or age.”

A Benefit Dinner for Solidarity
To help secure the future of the community center, Ý”pen is hosting a benefit dinner this coming Saturday, May 3, 2025. Chef Fabrizio Annicchiarico (read more about him here!) “” known for his creative, plant-based cuisine “” will craft an exclusive three-course menu, supported in the kitchen by Nada Magnoni, while a large team of volunteers from Ý”pen Lënster ensures the smooth running of the entire event.
“I’ve long wanted to do something for charity, and when I heard about Ý”pen, I knew right away: this is exactly what I was looking for,” says Annicchiarico. His cooking philosophy centers on respect for nature: “I improvise with what’s available “” inspired by the Japanese Ganbatte philosophy: “Do your best with what you have.”

The dinner is already fully booked, but as a consolation, we’re sharing the starter recipe with you! Back in fall 2023, Annicchiarico shared with us the recipe for his famous Faux Gras “” a plant-based alternative to foie gras “” which will kick off the three-course meal on Saturday.

The evening will be accompanied by live music from Luxembourgish pianist Daniel Schweitzer, also known from the “Café des Artistes.” He too is volunteering his talent to support Ý”pen Lënster.
Financial Challenges “” and an Open Invitation
Despite the passionate commitment of many volunteers, Ý”pen faces significant financial challenges. The current public funding will expire at the end of the year. “We are still short about €45,000 to cover all running costs through the end of the year,” says Welter.
“We want Ý”pen to remain accessible to everyone “” without barriers to entry,” she explains. That’s why the organization is increasingly seeking donations and looking for sponsors from the local business community. “It would be wonderful if local entrepreneurs found it in their hearts to support Ý”pen with a donation. Every contribution counts.”
Anyone interested in getting to know Ý”pen Lënster is warmly invited to visit. “Our doors are open to everyone, just as our name suggests,” emphasises Welter. “Come by, see for yourself, meet wonderful people, and experience how diverse and vibrant community life can be.”
