As part of the Dodecanese island group, Kos impresses not only with numerous beaches but also with significant relics from a long and eventful past.
“Most people spend the whole day by the pool, even though we have the most beautiful beaches in the world here,” wonders Dia Toggas. The 42-year-old runs a kiosk in Kardámena on the south coast of Kos. No, she doesn’t get rich from it. But during the seven to eight months of the season from May to October, she earns enough to live on for the rest of the year, Dia insists.
Whether Kos really has the most beautiful beaches in the world is debatable. What is certain is that there are some fantastic bays and beaches along the 112-kilometre coastline, such as Paradise Beach, Camel Beach, Sunny Beach, or the bay of Kamari. Kardámena itself is probably not among them. On the contrary, the beach sections are narrow and consist of a mixture of sand and gravel. However, the 2,000-soul village becomes the (secret) party capital of the island when it comes to nightlife. Nightclub after nightclub lines the promenade, enticing bars, cafes, and restaurants.
