On Monday the 7th of November, the Oberweis shop in Grand-Rue reopened its doors after several months of renovation.
“Our Oberweis shop on the main street has taken on a completely different look. Before, the architecture was dominant, the shop was very simple. Now we’re getting back to basics: we’re closer to our customers, we offer a more welcoming, more refined place and an even better presentation of the products”, explains Jeff Oberweis, full of enthusiasm.
A giant fresco
At the heart of the renovation is a huge 10-metre fresco depicting the Grand-Rue in 1903. “Everything is done by hand and in perspective. It was a great emotion for me when I discovered this finished work, I had the impression of walking down the street at the beginning of the last century. It is a real work of art. The street has been recreated as it was at that time, thanks to the many photos that were taken of the Grand-Rue in that year. The artist, Akram Sultan, had to take inspiration from different angles to create this 10-metre masterpiece. He was the one who carved the cacao pod into the wall of our shop in the Cloche d’Or.”
In terms of know-how and craftsmanship, apart from the pastries and other treats from Oberweis, the mosaics in the shop have remained. Laid in the old tradition by the renowned Parisian mosaicist, Delphine Messmer, they have all been restored and kept in their place.
Seating on the ground floor
In addition, there is now seating for twenty people on the ground floor and, on the first floor, the tea room is still available with a new look: “We have taken the crisis as a challenge, to show our customers that we are there for them, today and tomorrow, and that for fifty years we have been giving them the best,” continues the owner. “This is just a framework that serves to highlight our products, thanks in particular to specially designed lighting, and to provide customers with the best possible experience. We hope that they will like our efforts.”
