The Hissing Beauty – Journey to the Last Steam Forest Railway in the World

The MaramureÅŸ region in northwestern Romania is one of the most amazing areas in Europe. In addition to the impressive forests, the tallest wooden churches in Europe, and the cheerful cemetery of Sâpânta, there is another star: an iron beauty named MocăniÈ›a. It is the last steam forest railway in the world, taking tourists on a journey of awe from March to November.

I set off to Maramureş, a miraculous area in northwestern Romania. Specifically to the village of Vișeu de Sus, known as Oberwischau in German. Besides the Danube Delta and the Apuseni Mountains, this part of Romania is still considered a largely undiscovered natural paradise. Here, in the northernmost corner of the country, there are no roads, villages, or hotels, but plenty of wolves and bears.
